Which Licence Do You Need?

LIGHT RIGID (LR)
Vehicle: Rigid trucks 4.5 – 8 tonnes GVM, and buses up to 8 tonnes with up to 12 adult seats.
Best for: Couriers, light delivery, small community buses, the first step off a car licence.
Prerequisite: Full Class C car licence for at least 1 year.
FULL COURSE DETAILS
MEDIUM RIGID (MR)
Vehicle: 2-axle rigid trucks over 8 tonnes GVM, and buses over 8 tonnes with up to 12 adult seats.
Best for: Local waste trucks, medium freight, tow trucks, mid-sized delivery.
Prerequisite: Full Class C car licence for at least 1 year.

HEAVY RIGID (HR)
Vehicle: Rigid trucks with 3 or more axles over 8 tonnes GVM, plus articulated buses.
Best for: Large delivery rigid trucks, tippers, concrete agitators, route buses.
Prerequisite: Held a Class C or LR licence for at least 2 years (MR counts as 1 year toward this).
FULL COURSE DETAILS
HEAVY COMBINATION (HC)
Vehicle: Prime mover plus one semi-trailer, or a rigid truck towing a trailer over 9 tonnes GVM.
Best for: Long-haul semi-trailer work, linehaul, interstate freight, tilt tray operators.
Prerequisite: Held an MR or HR licence for at least 1 year.

MULTI COMBINATION (MC)
Vehicle: B-doubles, B-triples, road trains — a prime mover towing more than one trailer.
Best for: Top-tier linehaul, mining and regional operators, highest-paying heavy vehicle work.
Prerequisite: Held an HR or HC licence for at least 1 year.
