MR to HR Licence Upgrade in Sydney

The short version

If you have held a Medium Rigid (MR) licence for at least 12 months in NSW, you are eligible to upgrade to Heavy Rigid (HR). Training is typically 6 to 8 hours across one or two sessions and ends with the Transport for NSW heavy vehicle competency assessment. You walk out with an HR licence the same day you pass.

1. Why upgrade MR to HR

Medium Rigid lets you drive 2 axle trucks over 8 tonnes. Heavy Rigid opens up 3 or more axle trucks over 8 tonnes, which is where the bigger paychecks sit:

• Concrete agitators, tippers, tilt trays
• Waste collection and recycling trucks in the Sydney LGAs
• Large rigid delivery trucks (furniture, whitegoods, machinery)
• Route and articulated buses over 8 tonnes

In Western Sydney specifically, HR-licensed drivers are in constant demand for councils, civil construction and waste operators. HR is also the prerequisite for HC (Heavy Combination) down the road — if you eventually want to drive semi-trailers, HR is the next rung.

2. Eligibility to upgrade

Transport for NSW sets the minimum criteria:

• You have held an MR licence for at least 12 months (or a Class C / LR for at least 2 years)
• Minimum age 20 years
• You are medically fit to operate a heavy vehicle (some employers require a commercial driver medical)
• Your licence has no current suspensions or major demerit issues
• Valid photo identification

3. Training hours and format

Most MR to HR students complete training in 6 to 8 hours spread across 1 to 2 sessions. The exact number depends on how recently you drove anything over 8 tonnes, your confidence in reversing a rigid, and your comfort on the Transport for NSW test route.

At Melissa Truck Driving School, a typical MR to HR block looks like:

• Session 1 (3 hours): pre-trip inspection on a 3-axle rigid, cabin familiarisation, exhaust brake + engine brake technique, low-speed manoeuvres, reversing drills at our Prestons yard
• Session 2 (3 hours): real road training on Hume Highway, M5, Camden Valley Way, hill starts, roundabouts with longer wheelbase, assessment route rehearsal
• Assessment (same day or next): Transport for NSW heavy vehicle competency assessment with an accredited assessor

We do not sell 12-hour packages and rush you through. You book 6 hours, you get 6 hours, we add more only if you ask for it.

4. What you will actually learn

• Operating a 6x4 rigid truck safely in Sydney traffic
• Air brake systems — proper service, park and emergency brake discipline
• Engine brakes and exhaust retarders — when to use them, when not to
• Low-speed reverse into a loading dock with limited visibility
• Hill starts on a 6 percent gradient without rolling back
• Fatigue management basics and work diary rules
• Chain of responsibility under the Heavy Vehicle National Law
• Navigating roundabouts, intersections and merges with a long-wheelbase vehicle

5. The assessment

The HR competency assessment is a practical drive with a Transport for NSW accredited assessor. It covers pre-trip checks, low-speed manoeuvres, a 45 minute on-road component and a post-drive debrief. There is no written theory test at the HR stage — your existing licence covers that.

Melissa's 99 percent first-attempt pass rate comes from one simple rule: we only put you forward when you are actually ready. If your reversing still looks rough at the end of hour 4, we spend hour 5 fixing it instead of booking you in to fail.

6. What it costs

HR upgrade pricing in Sydney varies. We price transparently on the first phone call based on:

• How many hours you actually need (honestly assessed)
• Whether you qualify for government funded training
• Whether you are booking HR only or a bundle that leads into HC

Expect the full cost (training + assessment + truck use) to sit in the low four figures. We do not quote a public price here because the honest number depends on what you actually need, and we would rather tell you straight on the call than advertise a teaser.

7. What happens after you pass

You drive away with a printed HR receipt the same day. Your plastic licence card arrives in the post within 10 business days. You can legally drive any HR-class truck the moment the assessor ticks your sheet.

Many of our HR graduates come back within the year for HC upgrade training — that is when a prime mover and semi-trailer enters the picture. If that is your plan, tell us at the start so we can structure your HR training with HC in mind.
